El conjunto de especies tropicales de corales (Phyllum:Cnidaria, Clase:Anthozoa) que habitualmente se comercializan y se mantienen en acuario, se concentra taxon\u00f3micamente&nbsp; en un reducido grupo de ordenes (Subclase Hexacorallia, ordenes: Scleractinia, Actiniaria, Zoantharia, Antiphataria). Subclase Octocorallia, ordenes: Stolonifera, Alcyonacea, Gorgonaria, Corallimorfaria). De forma popular, se denominan&nbsp; corales \u201cblandos\u201d aquellas especies que soportan a la colonia de p\u00f3lipos individuales mediante un tejido flexible conjuntivo \u2013como es el caso de los Alcyonaceos- o mediante un tejido c\u00f3rneo \u2013como es el caso de las gorgonias- . Igualmente, se conocen bajo el t\u00e9rmino de corales \u201cduros\u201d, aquellas especies cuya esqueletog\u00e9nesis&nbsp; incluye la formaci\u00f3n de una estructura dura (formada por aragonito en un 90% y el resto por calcita y sales de magnesio y estroncio entre otras) sobre la que aflora el tejido conjuntivo blando que alberga tanto a los p\u00f3lipos individuales como a diferentes c\u00e9lulas especializadas comunes. En un esquema cl\u00e1sico y simplificado, dir\u00edamos que&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; en materia de alimentaci\u00f3n de corales mantenidos en acuario tendr\u00edamos tres categor\u00edas: a) especies con alimentaci\u00f3n exclusiva v\u00eda algas simbiontes (me resisto al t\u00e9rmino alimentaci\u00f3n fotosint\u00e9tica o corales fotosint\u00e9ticos, b) especies con estrategia alimentaria mixta: la proporcionada por las zooxantelas m\u00e1s la captura de organismos planct\u00f3nicos y c) especies que se alimentan exclusivamente de los organismos pel\u00e1gicos que capturan. La captura de plancton por parte de los corales de las categor\u00edas b) y c) se considera fundamentada casi exclusivamente en organismos zooplanct\u00f3nicos, que dependiendo del tama\u00f1o de los p\u00f3lipos de la&nbsp; especie de coral puede cubrir un amplio espectro de presas (cop\u00e9podos, nauplius de cop\u00e9podos, rot\u00edferos e incluso bacterias). En esta visi\u00f3n de su dieta, el fitoplancton tendr\u00eda un rol secundario, en cuanto no ser\u00eda una fuente de alimento directo, si no que servir\u00eda para alimentar a las presas zooplanct\u00f3nicas del coral y en cierto modo ser\u00eda responsable del perfil nutricional de estas \u00faltimas. Sin embargo algunos estudios ponen en cuesti\u00f3n esta visi\u00f3n secundaria del fitoplancton en la alimentaci\u00f3n de los corales.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h4 id=\"at-8991\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Abstract<\/h4><div id=\"ac-8991\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\">In this article, its author, Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Cid, exposes some of the existing evidence of the relevance of phytoplankton in coral feeding. The whole of tropical coral species usually marketed and kept in aquarium (Phylum: Cnidaria Class: Anthozoa), are taxonomically concentrated in a small number of orders (Subclass Hexacorallia, orders: Scleractinia, Actiniaria, Zoantharia, Antiphataria. Subclass Octocorallia, orders: Stolonifera, Alcyonacea, Gorgonaria, Corallimorfaria). Among aquarists, in popular language, are called \u00absoft corals\u201d those species that support individual polyps colony by a flexibility connective tissue (as is the case&nbsp; in Alcyonacea) or by corneal tissue such as gorgonians. Similarly, are referred under the term \u00abhard\/stony corals\u00bb species whose skeletogenesis includes the formation of a hard structure (formed by aragonite at 90% and the remaining 10%&nbsp; by calcite and magnesium and strontium salts). Covering this hard skeleton emerges soft connective tissue that houses both individual polyps as different specialized cells belonging to the colony. In a classic and simplified scheme, we would say that for corals kept in aquarium, there are three basic models of feeding: a) species that feed solely through their symbiotic algae (I refuse to use the term \u201cphotosynthetic feeding\u201d or \u201cphotosynthetic corals\u201d, b) species with mixed feeding strategy: organic compounds provided by the zooxanthellae algae supplemented with planktonic organisms captured and&nbsp; c) species that feed exclusively on pelagic organisms that capture. Plankton capture by corals in categories \u201cb\u201d and \u201cc\u201d&nbsp; is considered based almost exclusively on zooplankton organisms. The various species of corals, depending mainly on the size of their polyps, trap a wide range of prey (copepods, copepod nauplii, rotifers and even bacteria). In this vision about coral&#8217;s diet, phytoplankton have a secondary role, since it would not be a direct source of food for coral , but it would serve to feed several potential zooplanktonic prey and would be responsible for the nutritional profile of these latter.
